Workshop: How to Talk About Your Research with Investors

Great research is not enough. To capture the interest of investors, companies, or partners, it must be clear what problem it solves, what solution it offers, and for whom it creates value. In this hands-on workshop, you will prepare your own 120-second pitch, present it aloud, and receive feedback.

What to expect?

The workshop combines content development, hands-on presentation training, and insights from people who view scientific projects from a business perspective. This is not about simplifying science, but about the ability to select and clearly convey the information that matters to people outside academia.

Each participant will prepare and rehearse their own pitch aloud during the workshop. Six selected participants will then present it to the whole group and receive immediate feedback.

The event will be held in English.

Program

12.30–13.00 | Registration and networking

13.00–13.45 | How to communicate the value of your research
You will learn what information about your research people from business, investors, or potential partners need to hear. We will focus on three key questions:

  1. What problem are you solving?
  2. What solution are you offering?
  3. Who does the solution create value for?

You will also get to know the basic structure of a pitch deck adapted for the needs of scientists and research teams.

14.00–16.00 | How to present your research

In the second block, you will prepare your own 120-second pitch. We will show you how to grab attention right from the start, how to choose the most important evidence or argument, how to end your presentation, and how to prepare slides that work even in a short talk.
Six teams will have the chance to try out their pitch in front of an audience and receive immediate feedback. You don't need slides or a finished presentation prepared in advance – we will build the pitch during the workshop.

16.15–17.00 | How an investor perceives research

The afternoon will conclude with a panel discussion with an investor who focuses on research-based projects, and two founders of spin-off companies who moved from the scientific environment into business.

You'll hear what they look for in scientific projects, what information they need for further decision-making, and which mistakes are often repeated when presenting research. There will also be room for questions from participants.

17.00–18.00 | Networking

Who is the workshop for?

For researchers involved in the ADDIT-CE and BridgeTTe consortia – from PhD students and postdocs to senior researchers and heads of research groups.

You don't need business experience or a plan to start your own company. The skills you gain will also be useful when looking for partners for contract research, joint applied projects, or collaboration with industry.

Admission and registration

Admission to the event is free, but workshop capacity is limited to 50 participants. Reserve your spot through the registration form.

The workshop is organized by the ADDIT-CE and BridgeTTe projects in cooperation with JIC.
