About the region
Four leading Brno universities cover a broad spectre of degree programmes, educating highly qualified and bright people. Brno universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences are home to some of the most prestigious research centres in the Czech Republic. In terms of industry, the biggest development can be seen with respect to mechanical and electrical engineering, ICT and life sciences.
The South Moravian Region is the leading Czech region in terms of research and innovation support. Specialised agencies contribute to the process of improvement of technology transfer and competitiveness of the region, e.g. the South Moravian Innovation Centre, the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility or the Regional Development Agency South Moravia. The South Moravian Region offers a well-developed infrastructure for business and tools for the support thereof (business incubators, authorities concerned with the transfer of technologies, innovation centres), as well as suitable locations for investors (“brownfields”).
This environment is open to research and development, enabling the realisation of large research and development projects. They include CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology), CERIT (Centre for Education, Research and Innovations for ICT in Brno), FNUSA-ICRC (International Clinical Research Centre Brno) and the Regional Innovation Strategies. Other major projects are being planed and they shall be financed from Operational Programme “Research and Development for Innovations” (ERDF).
